FAQs About Medical Insurance In UAE

Is health insurance mandatory in UAE?

Yes, effective January 1, 2025, health insurance is mandatory for all residents across all Emirates (including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the Northern Emirates). You cannot issue or renew a residency visa without valid medical coverage.

Costs depend on the plan type. The mandatory Essential Benefits Plan (EBP) for lower-salary employees (earning under AED 4,000) starts from approximately AED 525 – AED 650 per year. Comprehensive individual plans usually range from AED 2,500 to over AED 10,000 annually.

For a family of four on a comprehensive plan, premiums typically start around AED 15,000 – AED 20,000 per year. However, basic coverage for dependents can be found for significantly less, starting around AED 3,000 – AED 5,000 total, depending on the network tier.

The system primarily uses Direct Billing. You present your Emirates ID (which acts as your insurance card) at a network facility, pay a small co-pay (e.g., AED 50), and the insurer pays the provider directly. If you visit a clinic outside your network, you must pay upfront and file for reimbursement.

Yes, it is a prerequisite. To renew your residency visa, you must submit a “Certificate of Health Insurance” to the immigration authorities (ICP or GDRFA) proving you have active coverage for the renewal period.

Very fast. Most insurance brokers and digital platforms can issue a policy certificate within 1 to 24 hours. This speed allows you to proceed with urgent visa applications without delay.

You can purchase policies via comparison websites, broker portals, or directly from insurer websites. You simply upload your passport and Emirates ID details to generate a quote and pay online.
